A staff report to the Los Angeles City Planning Commission offers up new renderings for Capri Capital Partners' proposed redevelopment of the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza shopping mall.
The master plan for the project, which emerged in late 2014, calls for adding more that 2 million of programmed space to the 43-acre site, which is located at the corner of Crenshaw and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevards. A full buildout of the development would include:
- A eight-story, 94-foot tall building at Stocker Street and Santa Rosalia Drive featuring 400 hotel rooms with meeting space and restaurants.
- A 10-story, 135-foot tower featuring approximately 148,000 square feet of office space at 39th Street and Crenshaw Boulevard.
- Multiple six-story buildings that would create 961 residential units - including 551 condominiums and 410 apartments - above ground-floor retail uses.
- A replacement parking garage for up to 6,829 vehicles, serving both commercial and residential uses.
- Over 330,000 square feet of new retail space across the proeprty, including a new village at Crenshaw and Stocker, and a replacement for an existing grocery store.
- Landscaped open space across the property.
The existing shopping mall, built in the mid 20th century, would be retained through the project.
Illustrations by Ian Espinoza Associates shed light on the master plan's completed vision, showcasing pedestrian-oriented construction and tree-lined boulevards.
A 2016 report from the Los Angeles Times explored various perspectives on the project through the eyes of Baldwin Hills residents and elected officials. Though the most ambitious development slated for the community, it is just one of several changes shepherded by the impending arrival of Metro's $2-billion Crenshaw/LAX Line, which will have a station beneath the mall.
