Last month, developers Forest City and QIC announced pared down plans to construct a mixed-use project on parking lots surrounding the South Bay Galleria shopping center in Redondo Beach.  A new back of renderings sheds more light on the project.

After accepting feedback from neighboring residents, Forest City and QIC have agreed to cap the maximum number of apartments on the property to 300, all of which would be located along Hawthorne Boulevard.  In exchange for the lost apartments along the west side of the property, plans now call for office space and a new neighborhood park.  The other elements of the project - such as a proposed 150-room hotel - are unchanged.

The project is being designed by Gensler, AHBE Landscape Architects, KGM, RSM Design, Tait and Togawa Smith Martin.

The South Bay Galleria project is scheduled to break ground in 2020.  After a 40-month buildout, completion is expected by 2023.

In the more distant future, Metro has plans for a 4.6-mile extension of the Green and Crenshaw/LAX Lines that would flank the Galleria.  Both of the alignments under consideration would abut the shopping mall.
