With a nearly $6-million federal grant in hand, construction is set to begin next year for an expansion of Glendale Central Park, reports the Glendale News-Press.
The park, located at the northwest corner of Colorado and Louise Streets, is set to grow in size from 1.45 acres to 2.71 acres under the project, which is expected to cost more than $15 million.
A design concept for the project, named 'Grand Steps," calls for emphasizing the project's western face. A pedestrian paseo connecting to Brand Boulevard would lead to the grand steps referenced in the name, leading up to a great lawn at the center of the space. Plans also call for an outdoor covered amphitheater, playgrounds, shade structures, a splashpad, and an outdoor fitness plaza, per a news release from Congresswoman Laura Friedman.
SWA Group developed the design concept for the park, which was approved in 2019.
Supplementing the nearly $6 million in federal funding, the remaining cost of the project is to be covered by Glendale's general fund.
Completion of the project is expected in 2027.
Plans to revamp and expand Glendale Central Park are a result of the construction of the Armenian American Museum, which sits at the southern section of the park along Colorado Street. Much of the park's existing green space has been given over to the museum's footprint.
