The wood and concrete frame of a Googie-inspired apartment building is nearly complete in Mid-City.

The project, located at 6001 W. Pico Boulevard, is being developed by Los Angeles-based Ikon Ltd.  Upon completion, the six-story edifice will contain 48 apartments - including five low-income affordable units - with 1,000 square feet of ground-floor retail and a 70-car garage.

PK Architecture designed the project, which will incorporate some of the signature design elements of the property's original occupant - an Orange Julius stand.

The neon sign of L.A. Burger, the business that was most recently located on the site, has been saved and will be incorporated into the new project.  The restaurant is slated to return as the ground-floor tenant of the new apartment complex.

A slew of similar mixed-use apartment buildings are in the works for the surrounding stretch of Pico Boulevard, including a 123-unit development proposed one block east.

Canfield Development is also in the midst of construction at a condominium complex near the intersection of Pico and Fairfax Avenue.
