Seven months after we last dropped in, the curtain is lifting at Greystar's Rae on Sunset apartments in Hollywood.
The two-building development, located at 7500 and 7550 Sunset Boulevard, features a combined total of 200 apartments when complete - including 20 units of deed-restricted very low-income housing. Those homes will stand above ground-floor commercial space and basement parking.
Steinberg Hart is serving as the architect of record for both buildings, which have distinct appearances. The smaller eastern building at 7500 Sunset, which has a triangular footprint, features red brick as its signature exterior finish, while the larger western building uses sand-colored tile. In both cases, upper level setbacks give way to outdoor decks for residents.
According to a project website, pre-leasing for the apartments is set to begin in Summer 2023.
Although Greystar is the developer for Rae on Sunset, the project was entitled by Faring, a real estate firm headquartered in neighboring West Hollywood. That company's portfolio of mixed-use and commercial includes a proposed hotel at the site of the historic Factory nightclub and a new office building that will rise next to the historic French Market.
The Rae on Sunset site was shaped by the former path of the Pacific Electric Railway streetcar system, which once cut diagonally through the surrounding section of Hollywood. The abutting intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Gardner Street was once the site of a junction between the Red Car system's Hollywood Line and Laurel Canyon Shuttle.
