Half-acre park takes shape at 5800 S. Figueroa St. in South L.A.

At the intersection of Figueroa Street and Slauson Avenue in South Los Angeles, concrete and landscaping are in place for Senator Bill Greene Memorial Park, a new open space on a long-vacant LADWP property.

The half-acre park, located at the northeast corner of the intersection at 5800 S. Figueroa Street, is located on the former site of the LADWP's Figueroa Pump Station, which was razed in 1959. The new park is named for former State Senator Bill Greene Memorial Park, a onetime state legislator and civil rights activist who represented South Los Angeles in Sacramento for a quarter century.

As indicated in architectural plans presented to the Board of Recreation and Parks Commissioners in 2023, the park is a largely hardscape space with concrete pavers, plants, and decomposed granite in place. Plans also call for benches, public restrooms, outdoor fitness equipment, seating, landscaping, and educational signage relating to water conservation, stormwater capture, and native plants.

The sparse landscaping seen in the park was not to the liking of neighboring residents, who circulated a petition asking for additional green space within Bill Greene Memorial Park.

The park sits along the path of Metro's 5.5-mile Rail to Rail active transportation corridor, which transformed a freight rail right-of-way which cuts east-to-west through South Los Angeles into a bike path with landscaping.
