Hoag Hospital Irvine completes $1-billion expansion

Hoag Hospital Irvine has announced the completion of a six-building, $1-billion expansion that has more than doubled its patient capacity.

The Sun Family Campus, named for principal donors Diana and David Sun, is located along Sand Canyon Avenue, the new construction adds facilities providing treatment in cancer, women's health, and digestive health, as well as surgical facilities, emergency care, adn orthopedic care. The various hospital and outpatient facillities on the campus are interconnected, allowing patients to move through the diagnostic, treatment, and recovery process within the same space.

Designed by LPA Design Studios, the new buildings are situated around landscaped gardens, and incorporate natural lilght into their design.

“We had the rare opportunity to build around the patient experience from the ground up,” said Hoag Hospital board chair Robert Brunswick in a news release. “That meant thinking not only about the medicine and technology inside these buildings, but also about how patients and families move through them, how they stay connected to their care teams, and how the environment itself can support them during some of the most important moments of their lives.”

The full project included:

• 155 new inpatient beds, increasing the hospital's total bed count to 251.
• 11 new operating rooms and two procedure rooms. 
• Approximately 120,000 square feet of ambulatory facilities 
• Dedicated cancer, women’s health, digestive health, and augmented surgical facilities
• Expansions to the emergency department, inpatient medical care, and orthopedic institute
• A dedicated cancer urgent care clinic
• A new women’s hospital with a 24-hour OB emergency department
• A 17-bed level III NICU.

Hoag operates two hospitals in Orange County, including the Irvine hospital and its original Newport Beach facility.
