The official opening date is still one week away, but officials convened yesterday at Hollywood Burbank Airport to cut the ribbon on its new passenger terminal.

The $1.3-billion project, set to open to the general public on October 13, will replace existing passenger facilities which date to the 1920s. The new 355,000-square-foot building features 14 passenger gates in addition to shops, restaurants, a ticketing lobby, a security checkpoint ,and a new baggage claim.

The existing terminal sits along the south side of the airport, near the Burbank Airport South station on Metrolink's Ventura County Line. The new terminal, built at the northeast section of the airport, will remain transit adjacent, with Metrolink's Burbank Airport North stop on the Antelope Valley Line a short walk to the east.

The project was delivered by a team that includes Corgan, Holder, Pankow, TEC, CannonDesign, and Burns & McDonnell. The terminal's signature design element is a swooping roof canopy that extends into facade of the airport's parking structure. The design has been described as evoking a silver screen in a public plaza.
