Passengers will not have to wait long to make use of Hollywood Burbank Airport new terminal.

A countdown on the $1.3-billion project's official website now points to an opening date of October 13, at which point the Mid-Century Modern-inspired terminal will replace existing facilities dating to the 1920s. The 355,000-square-foot building includes 14 passenger gates, as well as room for shops, restaurants, a ticketing lobby, a security checkpoint ,and a new baggage claim.

The new terminal sits at the northeast section of the airport site, near Metrolink's Burbank Airport North stop on the Antelope Valley Line. The existing terminal sits along the south side of the airport, near the Burbank Airport South station on Metrolink's Ventura County Line.

The project was designed and built by a team that includes Corgan, Holder, Pankow, TEC, CannonDesign, and Burns & McDonnell. The new structure features a swooping roof canopy that will extend into facade of the airport's parking structure. The design has been described as evoking a silver screen in a public plaza.
