A City-owned property north of Hollywood and Highland is set to be converted into a facility providing housing and services to mothers, according to an item now being considered by the City Council.

Under a motion introduced recently by 4th District Councilmember Nithya Raman, Aviva Family and Children Services is poised to operate the proposed community at 1901-1905 N. Highland Avenue, which would consist of a series of modular structures providing round-the-clock care and supportive services to pregnant women, postpartum mothers, women with dependent children, and substance-exposed women.

According to the motion, the currently-vacant property will house a total of 27 women, including four "family units," for those living with children.

Raman previously looked to initiate a request for proposals process to pursue redevelopment of the Highland Avenue site with permanent supportive housing. However, after determining that proximity to the Hollywood fault line made the site unsuitable for such a project, plans to grant the property to a developer were abandoned. At the time, it was suggested that interim housing could be an alternate use for the site.
