Seven months after we last stopped by, the prefabricated modular units of the Isla Intersections are gradually being assembled in South L.A.'s Broadway-Manchester neighborhood.

The apartment complex, now rising from a triangle-shaped parcel at the intersection of Broadway and Imperial Highway, is being developed as a joint venture between Clifford Beers Housing and American Family Housing. The new five-story structure will feature 53 studio apartments and 900 square feet of ground-floor commercial uses when completed.

Designed by LOHA, the Isla project arranges the modular units to create terrace decks for residents. Athens Way, a road which flanks the western perimeter of the site, is to be converted into a "shared street" called the Annenberg Paseo. The corridor, where pedestrians, motorists, and cyclists will share the same right-of-way, is being named for the Annenberg Foundation, which provided funding for the project.

The more than $22-million apartment complex will offer apartments to formerly homeless persons earning from 30 to 40 percent of the area median income, according to a staff report by the Housing and Community Investment Department.

The project's lead developer, Clifford Beers Housing, is also developing the Corazon del Valle apartments in Panorama City, and has recently completed projects in Long Beach and Exposition Park.
