The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has approved $15 million in additional funding for a new interim and supportive housing complex at the Metropolitan State Hospital campus in Norwalk

"The buildings on this corner of the Metropolitan State Hospital campus have done no one any good sitting vacant for years,” said Supervisor Janice Hahn in a news release. “We are transforming them into a mental healthcare village where people can get the help and treatment they need. Converting three of the buildings into permanent supportive housing where people can live long-term is an important part of our plan and this funding keeps us on track.”  

The L.A. County Care Community campus will consist of six buildings which were completed in the 1920s, but disused for more than 20 years. Construction commenced earlier this year for a project which will renovate the first three buildings into 16-bed locked mental health rehabilitation facility and a 70-bed interim housing complex with wraparound services. The money approved by the Board of Supervisors will go toward the conversion of the remaining structure into 60 studio and one-bedroom apartments for formerly-homeless adults, as well as common spaces and offices for staff.

The project's development team includes PATH, Torti Gallas, MIG, and NAC.

Completion of the new locked facility and interim housing is on track to occur between December 2027 and January 2028, while the permanent supportive housing facilities are expected to open in 2029.
