A paper street in the unincorporated community of East Los Angeles could be transformed into a pocket park, the L.A. County Department of Parks and Recreation has announced in its newsletter.

The property - mapped as a connection of Folsom Street between Gate Street to the west and Herbert Avenue to the east - is a hillside property and currently undeveloped. Funding from the Parks Department's Technical Assistance Program could go to converting the roughly .36-acre lot into a pocket park featuring a gathering space at the top of the hill, landscaping below, and a new staircase to connect the two streets for pedestrians.

Converting the property into a park would require the construction of retaining walls, which could be adorned with public art. The Parks Department is also considering the construction of a stormwater swale to both manager water flow and provide other recreation opportunities.

The site is located in an area which suffers from a dearth of public green space. If the Parks Department determines that conversion to a park is viable, funding will be provided to cover the cost of environmental reports, design, and community outreach.
