L.A. City's Sanitation Department could team up with the non-profit organization Goodwill Southern California to redevelop a series of contiguous properties in Lincoln Heights.

The proposed, introduced as a motion last week by 1st District Councilmember Gil Cedillo, would involve a LASAN-owned property at 303 N. San Fernando Road and Goodwill's headquarters across the street at 342 N. San Fernando Road. The LASAN property could serve as a permanent home for the department's Clean Water Division, but could also be developed to include unspecified community-serving functions.  The Goodwill property is set for improvements that include a new parking structure, a warehouse, and possibly affordable housing.

Cedillo's motion notes "incredible synergies and huge opportunities for collaboration and partnership," between the two organizations, and that both parties could achieve "space optimization, cost efficiency and expedition delivery," by working together.

The proposal, which has been referred to the City Council's Information, Technology and General Services Committee for consideration, moves that LASAN and other City departments report back on the subject and formulate a draft agreement.

Both parcels are located within walking distance of the Gold Line's Lincoln Heights Station.  They are also located in close proximity to a Metrolink and Amtrak right-of-way where Metro is considering plans to improve commuter rail service.
