Just over one year after breaking ground, the concrete and rebar pillars that will eventually form Los Angeles Trade-Technology College's (LATTC) new Construction Technology Building are emerging above ground level in Historic South-Central.

The roughly $108-million project, located on a previously vacant site at the northeast corner of 23rd Street and Grand Avenue, will consist of a three-story edifice containing 180,000 square feet of classrooms, laboratories, and offices. As its name would imply, the building will serve as the new home of LATTC's largest program - construction maintenance and utilities - will relocated from another building located on the main campus.
Designed by HMC Architects, the Construction Technology Building will be clad in red brick and accented with white metal panels. The facility will include similar exterior finishes to LATTC's Student Services and Technology Information Buildings, a pair of Johnson Favaro-designed structures located directly across Grand Avenue.
Other recent expansions to the LATTC campus include the school's $48-million Culinary Arts Building and a proposed Design and Media Center one block north at Grand Avenue's intersection with Washington Boulevard.

In recent years, a handful of large new commercial developments have been built around the perimeter of the LATTC campus, as investors have ventured north from USC and south from Downtown Los Angeles.
Six years ago, Geoff Palmer completed the 910-unit Lorenzo apartments on a site located south across 23rd Street. The Beverly Hills-based developer is also pursuing the construction of a 15-story, 280-unit apartment tower on a parking lot located a block east along Flower Street.
Two blocks south at the intersection of Grand Avenue and Adams Boulevard, Los Angeles-based developer Cityview broke ground earlier this year on a $125-million apartment complex which will include 296 residential units and ground-floor retail space.

East of the LATTC campus, a pair of parking lots adjacent to The Reef are also slated for redevelopment with housing, offices, and ground-floor commercial space. While that project has yet to proceed beyond the entitlement stage, the owners of the complex have installed a large LED billboard on the upper floors an existing 12-story structure.
