Expo Line passengers traveling through West Los Angeles may have noticed that the earth movers recently stripped away the last remnants the former cement plant at Pico and Sepulveda Boulevards, clearing the way for the Casden West L.A. development.

The project, which spans across approximately four acres, would include buildings up to 10 stories in height, featuring 595 apartments, 15,000 square feet of ground-floor retail space and underground parking for roughly 1,000 vehicles.

VTBS Architects is leading the project's design, with assistance from Bennitt Design Group.

Developer Alan Casden's original plan for mixed-use complex had incensed West L.A. neighbors, who objected to proposed buildings of up to 17 stories and potential big-box stores such as Target.  The development was eventually whittled down to its current size, and subsequently approved by the City of Los Angeles.

Additional details remain unclear.
