The Los Angeles City Council has selected a development team led by the Cesar Chavez Foundation to construct an affordable housing complex behind the iconic Westlake Theater near MacArthur Park.

The project - which includes Meta Housing Corporation as co-developer and Youth Policy Institute as its service provider - will consist of a five-story building featuring 78 rental apartments, 141 parking spaces and community spaces such as a tot lot, a kitchen, a tech lab and a central laundry facility.  Plans also call for the development to incorporate youth arts education and programming, due to the property's proximity to the abutting theater.

Los Angeles-based architecture firm LOHA is designing the project, which would span across four parcels at 619-629 S. Westlake Avenue.  A rendering shows an airy structure that rises around a landscaped courtyard that opens to the street.

A timeline for the project has not been announced.
