Last month, Long Beach Airport commenced work on $37-million overhaul of its passenger concourse in the lead up to the 2028 Olympic Games.
“This project represents an important investment in Long Beach’s future and the millions of travelers who choose our award-winning Airport each year,” said Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson in a news release. “As we prepare to welcome the world for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games, we are ensuring LGB continues to deliver a modern, comfortable and uniquely Southern California travel experience.”
Per a project landing page on the Long Beach Airport website, the renovation will include:
- Remodeling of the existing 11 gate areas, restrooms, and a new service animal relief area.
- Improvements to the existing central garden area including additional hardscape, seating, canopies, lighting, and a public announcement system.
- Upgraded seating with charging stations.
- Creation of two open-air garden areas at the exterior of the north and south concourse.
- Enhanced wayfinding signage and flight information displays
- Installation of a back-up generator and upgraded mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems.
- Incorporating sustainability features including LED lighting
- Extension of the exterior pedestrian canopy to Pad 11.
Construction, which is being carried out by PCL Construction Services, is on track for completion in Summer 2027.
Long Beach is financing the project in part through a more than $24-million grant provided by the Federal Aviation Administration. The concourse building opened in 2012.
