Details renderings have emerged for the $500-million redevelopment of the Hawthorne Plaza shopping center via a brochure posted to the Charles Company website.
As reported last year by the Daily Breeze, the project calls for razing the long-vacant mall and construction a series of new buildings featuring more than one million square feet of programmed space. A full buildout of the development, which is being called Magnitude LAX, would over 600 housing units, offices and 500,000 square feet of commercial space. Proposed facilities include a grocery store, a gym, a food hall, and a movie theater.
Renderings of the the project, by Culver City-based R&A Design, portray a seires of contemporary mid-rise buildings strung together with pedestrian bridges. The shopping center offers an open-air environment, with a series of paseos bisecting the property.
As of last November, demolition of the mall was expected to begin following the relocation of L.A. County workers into a new $25-million office building on 126th Street near the property.
