As COVID-19 continues to spread, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors have voted to extend an emergency order blocking some evictions through January 31, 2021.
The eviction protections, which were first enacted shortly after the pandemic's outset, applies to all unincorporated areas within Los Angeles County, as well as jurisdictions within its borders that have not adopted their own ordinances.
While most provisions of the County order are preempted by AB 3088, a bill which was signed into law in August, a motion jointly introduced by Supervisors Hilda Solis and Sheila Kuehl note that the extension will continue protections not included in the statewide legislation. These include limits on evictions of commercial tenants unable to pay rent due to COVID-19, and limits on rent increases, tenant harassment, and residential evictions related to just cause, nuisance, or pets.
As of early November, there are more than 320,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Los Angeles County, and more than 7,200 deaths attributed to the virus.
The Bord of Supervisors has voted to extend its eviction protections multiple times since they were first adopted on March 19. The order is retroactive to March 4.
