In 2015, the City of Lynwood converted an unused strip of land abutting the I-105 freeway into Ricardo Lara Park, a mile-long linear park featuring fitness stations, a community garden, and children's play areas.  Soon, another vacant site along the same highway could be repurposed in like fashion.

The new project would encompass an approximately 2.2-acre site  bounded by the I-105 freeway  to the south, Beechwood Avenue to the west, Fernwood Avenue to the north, and State Street to the east.  Plans call for improvements including a walking path, native landscaping, bioswales, and small recreation features.

As with Ricard Lara Park, SWA Group has been engaged to provide design services for the new project.

The proposed park, which has been deemed exempt from the California Environmental Quality Act, would just west of the Plaza Mexico shopping and commercial center, as well as Metro's Long Beach Boulevard/I-105 light rail station.

One block north of the park site, another empty lot the intersection of Imperial Highway and State Street is slated to be developed with a mixed-use proejct containing 348 apartments and more than 26,000 square feet of retail space.
