A four block stretch of 1st Street in Downtown Long Beach is poised for improvements, following an environmental clearance issued by the city.

The proposed makeover, which would extend from Elm Avenue in the east to Pacific Avenue in the west, is being funded by a grant awarded by a 2015 Metro call for projects. Additional money for predevelopment activities was secured through the Los Angeles County Development Authority.

The 1st Street Pedestrian Improvements project, as described in an environmental notice, would include new landscaping, colorful concrete paving, and refinished street furniture.

At the center of this corridor would sit the original Blue Line Rail Car #100, which was donated to the City of Long Beach by Metro in April 2021. Los Angeles County has provided $1.5 million to help install and reuse the retired rail vehicle as commercial space.

Plans from RJM Design Group show the vehicle set up at the eastern edge of the corridor, adjacent to Elm Avenue.

The city has previously estimated that construction of the 1st Street makeover could begin sometime in 2024.
