Developer Meta Housing Corp. has completed vertical construction of the Metro @ Buckingham, a senior affordable housing complex in Baldwin Hills.
The project, located at 4018-4030 Buckingham Road, consists of a four-story edifice featuring 103 apartments - including 102 one-bedroom units priced for low-income seniors. Other elements of the project include a central lawn, a fitness center, on-site supportive services, and a parking lot for 60 vehicles.
The approximately $38-million project will be priced for households at earning at or below 30 and 60 percent of the Los Angeles area median income, according to a staff report to the California Tax Credit Allocation Committee.
The Architects Collective is designing Metro @ Buckingham, which features a reduced height profile fronting Buckingham Road due to a zoning rule which limits buildings to 50 feet in height. The project is described as featuring a decorative ribbon wrapping the building, moving up and down its facade, using exterior stairs to shift from floor to floor.
The project site is located adjacent to a Kaiser Permanente medical office complex, as well as a proposed 700,000-square-foot bioscience research facility.
Just east at Crenshaw Boulevard - adjacent to a subway station that is now under construction - the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza shopping mall is slated for a redevelopment scheme which would add offices, housing, and a hotel to the 43-acre property.
