Last week, non-profit developer Meta Housing Corporation broke ground on a new affordable housing complex in unincorporated East Los Angeles.

The project, located at the southeast corner of Whittier Boulevard and Downey Road, will consist of a four-story building featuring 71 rental apartments, approximately 3,400 square feet of ground-floor commercial space, amenities, and a parking garage.

The $31-million development will provide a mix of one-, two-, and three-bedroom units, set aside for households making between 30 and 60 percent of the area median income.  Approximately 15 percent of the total apartments will also be equipped with mobility, auditory, and visual communication features for disabled residents.

Rents at Whittier and Downey SE will range from $507 to $,1405 per month.

The project is being designed by Pasadena-based architecture firm Gonzalez Goodale.  It is being built to obtain LEED Gold Certification, according to a statement released by Meta Housing Corp.

Completion is anticipated in Fall 2019.

Meta is also planning a second development across the intersection of Whittier and Downey - a three-story, 42-unit building.  That project is expected to break ground in Spring 2019.
