Just south of Langer's Deli and MacArthur Park, construction is slated to begin for a mixed-use housing complex.

The project, which is being developed by Universal Standard Housing, replaces a small commercial building just north of the intersection of 8th and Alvarado Streets. Plans call for a six-story edifice featuring 80 apartments - including nine extremely low-income affordable units - atop approximately 4,000 square feet of ground-floor retail space and limited parking.

The Architects Collective is designing the development, which will offer a mix of one- and two-bedroom apartments, in addition to ground-floor retail space and amenities.  A rendering depicts a contemporary mid-rise structure.

Like Universal standard Housing's recently completed project at 4252 Crenshaw Boulevard in Leimert Park, the 740 Alvarado development will be built with prefabricated modular units.  This will allow for an anticipated opening of the apartments by the fourth quarter of 2020.

The project site is located a block south of Metro's Westlake/MacArthur Park subway station, where a mixed-use affordable housing development is planned.

Additionally, a vacant lot across Alvarado Street is also slated to be developed with housing and retail space.
