Yet another affordable housing development has commenced work at the sprawling VA Campus in Westwood.

Earlier this month, the Core Companies announced the groundbreaking of the second and last phase of the MacArthur Field development, which is being built at the VA Medical Center's North Campus. The new construction, when compared with an initial phase that started construction in January, will account for 148 new homes for veterans.

Renderings of the new development portray a three-story structure, which will feature amenities such as a community garden, a dog park, gym, walking paths, and a business center.

Work on the initial component, the 74-unit Phase A, is on track for completion in August 2024. The second component, Phase B, is scheduled to wrap up work in August 2025.

Funding for the project includes tax credits and bonds provided by the State of California, as well as construction financing from BMO and permanent financing by the California Community Reinvestment Corporation.

"In Los Angeles, out permanent housing placements are up by one-third compared to last year," said interim medical center director for the VA Greater Los Angeles Health Care. "We've committed more than $140 million to improving infrastructure at the West LA VA Medical Center over the last three years and have dedicated funding to continue preparing the campus and its facilities for more housing construction."

The MacArthur Field project is one component of a larger master plan for the North VA Campus from The Veterans Collective which will eventually create 1,200 homes for unhoused veterans to sites along Wilshire Boulevard directly to the west of the 405 Freeway. Hundreds of homes are currently under construction on the campus.
