Six months after clearing a property near the Expo Line's Jefferson/USC Station, Canfield Development has begun construction of a new apartment complex called Fig 31.
The project site - located mid-block between Figueroa and Flower Streets at 505-517 W. 31st Street - will be developed with a seven-story structure containing 73 studio, one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments - including eight set aside as affordable housing at the very low- and moderate-income levels - and parking for 78 vehicles.
Designed by HBA Architects, the podium-type building will be clad in the signature red brick of the nearby USC Campus. Plans call for a variety of communal amenities, including a rooftop terrace.
According to Canfield Development, the property will be marketed as student housing, with capacity for up to 187 beds.
Completion is anticipated in 2021.
Other developers hoping to market new apartments to USC students are planning projects at Figueroa's intersections with 38th and 39th Streets.
