Major changes are in the works for a proposed hotel complex in the Arts District, reports The Dusty Archive.
Back in 2023, the Los Angeles City Council signed off on a proposal to redevelop an aging residential hotel at 2057 E. 7th Street as a component of a new hotel complex dubbed The Rendon. Plans had called for the construction of a new 15-story building near the northwest corner of 7th Street and Santa Fe Avenue, expanding upon the existing three-story building of the same name. The proposal called for 103 guest rooms as well as nearly 16,000 square feet of commercial uses, including an art gallery, a cafe, a restaurant, and a bar.
However, plans approved last year by the City of Los Angeles now indicate that the retention of the existing building is off the table. A revised project description calls for razing the full site to clear the way for a new building as an 11-story hotel with 123 guest rooms and 12,855 square feet of commercial uses - including an art gallery, a restaurant, and a bar.
The revised plan is designed by SCB, replacing the originally-approved project by Omgivning.
The Dusty Archive, which decried the change to the design as a violation of the original project approval, notes that a demolition notice has been posted to the existing building, which dates to 1914.
City records also list a new applicant for the project - Galaxy Commercial Holdings. The same applicant recently received City Planning Commission approval for a high-rise complex on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood.
