New laboratory space will sprout near the Caltech campus inPasadena, according to plans scheduled for a preliminary consultation by the Pasadena Design Commission.
The new project from Trammell Crow Company., slated for land owned by Caltech at 1364 E. Green Street, calls for the construction of a three-to-four-story building containing 93,539 square feet of multi-tenant office and laboratory space above a three-level, 280-car subterranean parking garage. The site, which sits at the intersection of Green Street and Holliston Avenue, has been improved with a surface parking lot since the 1990s.
Gensler is designing the contemporary low-rise structure, which features a grid-like exterior with earth tone colors.
"The building is located at an urbanistic transitional point between the verdant neighborhoods south of Del Mar Boulevard and the larger and denser character of the developments north of the site," reads a narrative included with an applicant presentaiton. "In addition, St. Philip the Apostle Church is located directly adjacent to the east with the presence of Pasadena City College adding its own dynamic presence nearby. The building’s proposed massing is a response to these varied contexts. The building shape steps down and reduces its overall mass at areas to the east, west and south that are adjacent to the more residential-scaled structures and the historic church. At the same time, at four levels, the north facade maintains a more urban character and scale along Green Street yet provides the modulation and openness as proposed in the specific plan for a pleasant pedestrian experience."
The new building from Trammell Crow Company follows two recent additions built by Caltech on its campus, including the Ginsburg Center for Quantum Precision Measurement (now under construction along California Boulevard) and the Resnick Sustainability Center.
