New details have emerged for the Icon at Panorama City, a $150-million mixed-use development that would take out a vacant Montgomery Ward department store located west of Van Nuys Boulevard.

According to the project's draft environmental impact report, Icon would span across an 8.9-acre property bounded by Roscoe Boulevard, Tobias Avenue and Cedros Avenue.  The developer, the Icon Company, proposes to raze all existing structures on the property to create multiple buildings featuring 422 apartments, approximately 200,000 square feet of commercial space and parking for 1,690 vehicles.

Icon would offer a mixture of studio, one-, two- and three-bedroom aparrtments in a pair of seven-story podium-type buildings.

Commercial stalls would be located within a series of two-story buildings flanking a retail promenade.  Proposed uses include shops, restaurants, a health club, a market and a multiplex movie theater with 1,200 seats.

Architecture firm Hochhauser Blatter is designing the project, which includes contemporary low-rise and mid-rise buildings.  The residential and commercial uses wrap a parking garage at the center of the property, obscuring it from view.

The environmental report points to an approximately 25-month construction timeline, beginning as early as the end of 2017 and finishing by early 2020.

A similar development is planned for the adjacent Panorama Mall, while developer Izek Shomof is converting a nearby office building into apartments with commercial space.
