Later today, developer Related California will present a controversial proposal to replace the Orange County Museum of Art with a condominium tower to the Newport Beach Planning Commission.

The proposed 26-story development, dubbed Museum House, would rise from an approximately two-acre site at 850 San Clemente Drive in Newport Center.  Plans call for 100 two-and-three-bedroom condominiums above a two-level underground parking garage.

An elevation rendering indicates that the tower, designed by Robert A.M. Stern Architects, would rise to an architectural peak of 315 feet above street level, making it one of the tallest buildings in Newport Beach.

The eponymous museum, located on the property since 1977, has already announced plans to relocate to a new building near the Segerstrom Center in Costa Mesa.

According to Museum House's initial study, the project is expected to be construction over the course of approximately 26 months, beginning in March 2018 and finishing by May 2020.
