At its meeting next week, the Los Angeles City Planning Commission will review Hillcrest Company's proposal to construct a live/work development in the Arts District.

Since 2014, the Los Angeles-based firm has been pursuing the construction of a mid-rise building at a current parking lot at 1800 E. 7th Street.  The proposed seven-story building would consist of 122 dwelling units, in addition to 9,500 square feet of street-level retail, restaurant, and offices uses, and 5,885 square feet of art production space for use by residents.  Plans also call for 132 automobile parking spaces.

According to a staff report, the project will set aside 14 apartments for households at the very-low-income level.

Architecture firm HansonLA is designing 1800 E. 7th Street, which would incorporate masonry on all facades, as well as pleated accent walls, glass balconies, and large gridded windows.

The Planning Department's staff report recommends approval for the project.

Hillcrest is also in the process of converting the nearby Walnut Grower's Building into apartments.
