Johnson Fain has designed numerous mixed-use projects throughout Chinatown and Downtown Los Angeles, including Blossom Plaza and La Plaza Village. Now the architecture firm has turned its sights to its own headquarters.
Last year, Johnson Fain submitted an application to the City of Los Angeles to replace its offices at 1201 N. Broadway with a residential-retail complex featuring 124 apartments and 8,700 square feet of ground-floor retail space. Plans call for a mixture of studio and one-bedroom dwellings, in addition to parking for 161 vehicles.
As of last October, Johnson Fain had not decided where to relocate should the project move forward.
The project's design, first unveiled last year by the Downtown News, is described as "streamlined and contemporary" with a variety of materials. Open space is included throughout the building, including a podium-level swimming pool and a rooftop deck.
A construction timeline for 1201 Broadway is estimated at two year, with work tentatively scheduled to begin in early 2019 and finish by mid-2021.
The property sits directly across the street from the narrow eight-acre property where the family behind the San Antonio Winery has proposed a similar mixed-use project featuring more than 900 residential units above commercial space.
