The Long Beach skyline is getting a new addition - but this is no apartment tower.
Relativity Space, known for its 3D printed rockets, announced its move to a 1-million-square-foot campus at 2400 E. Wardlow Road in 2021. The property where Boeing once built the C-17 Globemaster III, now a part of the Goodman Commerce Center, is to be used by Relativity Space for research and development, mission control functions, and manufacturing.
An environmental notice describes the proposed structures as standing 131 feet in height. It will be used for the "static testing of aerospace vehicles and systems with no engine test-firing."
The current plan for the tower has been scaled down from what was originally reported by the Long Beach Business Journal in January 2024, when Relativity Space had proposed a taller 200-foot-tall structure located to the east of the company's . The scale of the proposed structure had faced opposition from pilots and other businesses operating out of nearby Long Beach Airport.
Outside of Long Beach, Relativity Space has also leased a test stand at NASA’s Stennis Space Center in Hancock County, Mississippi. It is being used to test the company's Terran R rockets, which are approximately 270 feet in height.
