The project at 912 E. Broadway, which was developed by Abode Communities, transformed existing structures into40 homes for older adults. The project also includes on-site resident services and amenities such as a central courtyard.

“With Harrower Village, we hope to show others that affordable housing – as well as senior and publicly-funded housing – can be created from historic and existing structures,” said Omgivning managing director Joel Chappo in a news release. “One of only a handful of adaptive reuse projects in Glendale, the campus’ transformation preserves its space within the community fabric, as well as the historic integrity of the original buildings. It also fulfills a critical social need by creating accessible, healthy environments for older adults to live with dignity and independence.”

The property, initially developed in the 1920s, was once the Harrower Laboratory and Clinic, which vacated the site in 1948. The site was later occupied by a chiropractic college and special needs school. IN 2019, it was acquired by the City of Glendale, which elected to convert the site to affordable housing.

An adjacent site at 900 E. Broadway, also acquired by the City of Glendale in 2019, was separately redeveloped into a ground-up affordable housing complex by Meta Housing Corp.
