A recent presentation given to the Board of Recreation and Parks Commissioners sheds more light on plans to transform an empty lot across the street from City Hall into green space before the 2026 World Cup.

Corazon Art Park, which would be created through a partnership with the AltaMed Museum of Chicano and Mexican Art on an effort to bringing arts, cultural, entails a long-empty lot at the intersection of 1st Street and Broadway where plans for a park have fallen out of reach due to an ever increasing price tag. The partnership with AltaMed, announced in February of this year, would lead to the installation of new decomposed granite pathways, landscaping, parking area, and multipurpose open space, as well as the construction of a temporary wellness center and art gallery. Planned programming would include art exhibits, with room for other sports nutrition services, wellness activities, and food vendors.

A centerpiece to the complex would be a Corazon Heart Sculpture, consisting of a 30-foot tall and 35-foot wide structure containing a 20-foot spherical screen projecting content relevant to arts, culture, and from sponsors. Also in keeping with the proposed temporary nature of the space, landscaping would consist of 30 boxed trees.

Activation of the space would occur in advance of the 2026 World Cup, and the park would be available for the public from 8 am to 9 pm Thursdays through Sundays each week, and up to 10 pm for ticketed events.

Prior community presentations have indicated that Corazon Art Park would be staffed and have round-the-clock security. AltaMed's arrangement with the City of Los Angeles requires the payment of a $175,000 use fee for the property in quarterly installments through February 2027.
