Recently in the news for non-development reasons, the shuttered Intercontinental Century City hotel appears to be coming back to life after closing at the start of the global pandemic.
Earlier this month, the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety issued a construction permit for a nearly $98-million renovation of the 17-story building at 2151 Avenue of the Stars. In addition to upgrades to building infrastructure, permits describe makeovers of all public areas, guestrooms, and back of house areas, including modifications to existing restaurant spaces, the hotel lobby and bar, its reception areas, meeting rooms, and offices. At the second floor, plans call for a new pool bar, restrooms, and boardroom, while one guest room suite would be converted into an office for human resources staff. At the exterior, permits point to the proposed addition of a new trellis at the ground floor, as well as new hardscaping and landscaping.
City records indicate that Gensler is designing the renovation, while Pankow Builders is serving as contractor.
The 375-room hotel, completed in 1988, has previously operated as a J.W. Marriott and a Park Hyatt. Since shortly after its completion, the property has been owned by Sumitomo Realty & Development, Inc.
The hotel abuts the Fox Studios campus, currently slated for a $1.5-billion overhaul, and sits down the street from the new Metro station now under construction at Constellation Boulevard and Avenue of the Stars.
