An empty 1.2-acre lot next to the Sheldon Skate Park in Sun Valley is set to become new community open space, per a recent presentation to the Los Angeles Board of Cultural Affairs Commissioners.
The project, dubbed the Southeast Valley Roller Rink and Sheldon Recreation Center, would rise from a 1.2-acre property at 12515 Sheldon Street. Plans call for the construction of an 8,100-square-foot roller rink, a loop track, and a 1,300-square-foot recreation center. Plans also call for 16 new parking spaces, adding to an existing lot serving the Shelton Skate Park.
Rios is designing the project according to plans included with the presentation
"The site design is inspired by curvilinear skating movements, the proximity to the Tujunga Wash, and the scenic peaks and valleys of the Verdugo and San Gabriel Mountains visible from the site," reads a staff report. "Organic forms within the proposed circulation paths address safety by separating active skating from pedestrian movement."
The project is being funded by Proposition K, the park funding measure adopted by Los Angeles voters in 1996.
