Next door to the Santa Ana Zoo, construction is wrapping up for the second phase of Park on First, a mixed-use apartment complex from San Diego-based Wermers Properties.

The project, originally branded as "Elan," replaced a vacant Elks Lodge building at 1660 E. 1st Street with a pair of low-rise structures which will feature a combined total of 603 apartments and 24,290 square feet of ground-floor retail space at completion. Plans call for a mix of studio, one-, two-, and three-bedroom floor plans, in addition to parking for 1,157 vehicles.

At the time of its approval, the project was described as having a contemporary architectural style that incorporates Mid-century modern elements. Exterior finishes include glass, concrete, cement, and fiber cement siding.

In addition, approved plans permitted live/work "shopkeeper" type units, which would allow merchants to live above street-level businesses. Other commercial spaces are being designed to accommodate uses including retail, cafes, and offices.

Besides housing, the apartment complex also features an array of residential amenities that include swimming pools, fitness centers, a yoga room, an art gallery, and other outdoor gathering spaces with view of the adjacent zoo.

The project follows a string of large mixed-use projects featuring apartments and retail space along the 1st Street corridor in Santa Ana, including 419 units at 2222 E 1.st Street and 552 units at 2020 E. 1st Street.
