A long-vacant service station in Downtown Long Beach is slated to make way for new housing, according to an application recently filed by New Century Development, LP.

The proposed project, which would rise from a corner lot at 402 Atlantic Avenue, calls for the construction of a seven-story podium-type building featuring 82 studio, one-, and two-bedroom apartments above 82 non-required parking stalls.

A portion of the new apartments would be set aside for rent as affordable housing, making the project eligible for density bonus incentives permitting relief from certain zoning rules.

Studio T-Square is designing the apartment complex, according to the application. Renderings portray a contemporary podium-type building clad in siding and painted stucco, with amentiy decks located on the third and seventh floors.

The project site is located three blocks east of the City Place shopping center, where developer JPI recently commenced work on a 272-unit mixed-use apartment complex, and three blocks to the west of an affordable housing complex from Mercy Housing California now rising at 300 Alamitos Avenue.
