Nine months after breaking ground, the Shakespeare Center of Los Angeles has rolled out progress shots and a new look for its under-construction headquarters.

The $15-million project, which is building off of an existing 1960s structure at 1238 W. 1st Street, will create a 299-seat live performing arts theater; a 22,000-square-foot multimedia studio with capabilities for broadcasting, streaming, and recording; and other sound stage activities.

SPF:architects is designing the project, which will also involve a new skin for its previously nondescript exterior. In addition to cosmetic improvements, plans call for the creation of a folding door on the ground level to create an indoor-outdoor space, as well as a higher roof to enable a stage pit.

Completion of the project's first phase is now on track to occur by the fourth quarter of 2025.
