Two years after starting work, a long-planned multifamily housing development near the L.A. River in Silver Lake is starting to take shape...very gradually.

Riverglen II project, which was submitted to the Planning Department for entitlements in 2009, is under construction on a roughly 1,500-foot-long site along Riverside Drive between Fletcher Drive and Glendale Boulevard. At completion, plans call for a total of 120 one- and two-bedroom dwellings, perched above a two-level concrete podium.

GMPA Architects are designing the apartment complex, which will be composed of a trio of four-story buildings linked together with glass-enclosed modules. Those shared spaces will provide room for amenities such as a pool and a recreation center.

The design concept - which was influenced by its hillside location, the nearby I-5 Freeway, and Los Angeles River - is described as mimicking "the motion of cars along the freeway," with colored, modular elements in a narrative posted to the GMPA website.

City records list the owner of the development site as an entity connected to Los Angeles-based real estate management firm Miracle Mile Properties. A representative of the company indicated in 2021 that construction is expected to be completed within a period of approximately 33 months. That would have set the project up for an opening date in 2023.

The original Riverglen apartments, which consists of 160 one-, two-, and three-bedroom units on an adjoining property at Riverside and Glendale Boulevard, opened in 1988.
