The City of South Pasadena is moving forward with plans to convert a pair of vacant lots into pocket parks, per environmental notices issued earlier this month.

The Grevelia Street Pocket Park, planned for a 9,130-square-foot property at 1107 Grevelia Street, calls for transforming the empty site with:

  • a round plaza with a succulent garden and public art, surrounded by tables and seating areas;
  • a walking path connecting a children's play area and a passive play area;
  • a circular seating area surrounding a trees; and
  • other landscaping, trees, benches, bollards, and a drinking fountain.

The Berkshire Avenue Pocket Park, proposed for a 7,482-square-foot site at 2006 Berkshire Avenue, would include:

  • a landscaped gathering area with picnic tables and seating;
  • a painted four-square play court surrounded by fitness equipment;
  • a walking path connecting play areas; and
  • other landscaping, trees, benches, bollards, and a drinking fountain.

David Volz Design is designing both parks, according to a community presentation.

Outlook News Group reports that the City of South Pasadena initially approved plans for the parks in 2021, but have since struggled to find a construction firm to take on the job. After has since voted to raise the total budget for the two sites to approximately $2.1 million, up from an initial budget of approximately $1.76 million.
