The permanent home of Space Shuttle Endeavor is set to make its debut later this year in Exposition Park.
Officials with the California Science Center and Governor Newsom's office announced yesterday that the Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center will open to the public on November 13. The $450-million project began construction in mid-2026, and is already complete. Ongoing work includes outfitting the interior of building with artifacts.
“California has always been a place of discovery — from the early pioneers of flight to the engineers, astronauts, scientists, and innovators who helped shape the space age and who are powering the next era of exploration today," said Newsom in a news release. "The new Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center reflects our state’s enduring commitment to science, education, and innovation, and it will inspire curiosity and learning for generations to come."
ZGF designed the approximately 20-story building, which is split into three multi-level galleries– named Air, Space and Shuttle. The approximately 200,000-square-foot expansion roughly doubles the size of the California Science Center.
The new Air and Space Center is one of two Exposition Park landmarks set to debut in 2026. In September, the long-awaited Lucas Museum of Narrative Art is set to open along the western side of the park. The more than $1-billion project will serve as the home of Star Wars and Indiana Jones creator George Lucas' 40,000-piece art collection.
