Stick and concrete now protrude above ground just north of Metro's Pacific Coast Highway Station in Long Beach, where LINC Housing is in the midst of construction at its latest mixed-use affordable housing development.
The project, called The Spark at Midtown, is rising from a previously-vacant site at 1900-1940 Long Beach Boulevard. Plans call for a five-story structure which will feature 95 one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments reserved for households earning at or below 30 and 60 percent of the area median income. Half of the project will cater to formerly homeless persons or those at risk of becoming homeless.
City Fabrick, D33 Design, and WHA Architects are designing The Spark, which will incorporate community amenities such as a garden, after-school programming for children, and approximately 12,400 square feet of ground-floor space that will be occupied by a YMCA Youth Institute, a health clinic, and a cafe.
The $52-million development is on pace for completion in late 2020.
A similar affordable housing development from AMCAL Multi-Housing is now rising two blocks south at the intersection of Pacific Coast Highway and Long Beach Boulevard. A mixed-use condo development is also under construction near the light rail station.
LINC Housing is developing a slew of supportive and affordable housing communities in the Los Angeles area, including projects in South Whittier, Watts, Willowbrook, and Wilmington.
