Abode Communities has secured approximately $6.5 million in new state funding for a proposed affordable housing development on a Metro-owned property in Boyle Heights.

The Chavez Gardens project, slated for land near the E Line at 2518-2536 E Cesar E Chavez Avenue, calls for the construction of two four-story buildings containing a combined 110 apartments and 3,000 square feet of ground-floor commercial space. Plans also call for on-site parking.

Past plans have shown a mix of studio, one-, two-, and three-bedroom dwellings, which would serve households earning between 30 and 50 percent of the Los Angeles area median income level.

Abode is also designing the contemporary low-rise development, with Tina Chee serving as landscape architect.

Chavez Gardens received money from a $239 million funding round announced earlier this month by state officials. Chavez Gardens was the only Los Angeles area project to receive money, which will go toward 20 different developments creating 1,700 residential units.

The total cost of Chavez Gardens is estimated to be approximately $91.4 million. State officials previously awarded $3.8 million to the project.
