Six months after starting construction, the wood frame of a $33.5-million permanent supportive housing development is now complete in South Gate.

The PATH Villas at South Gate, now under construction at 5610 Imperial Highway, will consist of a four-story building featuring 60 studio and one-bedroom apartments reserved for veterans and formerly homeless persons with chronic health conditions.

The apartments will offer rents considered affordable to households earning between 30 and 60 percent of the area median income, according to a September 2019 staff report to the California Tax Credit Allocation Committee.  As of 2019, rents were expected to range from$548 per month for a studio to upwards of $1,175 per month.

Designed by Torti Gallas + Partners, the PATH Villas are depicted in renderings as a contemporary low-rise structure clad in stucco and corrugated metal panels.  An open-air courtyard is planned at the center of the apartment complex.

At the time of the project's groundbreaking, developer PATH Ventures expected to complete construction by Fall 2021.

PATH, which develops supportive housing throughout California, is also behind new supportive housing projects planned for West Adams and Hollywood.

The PATH Villas are rising from a property located just west of the intersection of Imperial Highway and Garfield Avenue, where construction is also underway for a 244-unit market rate apartment complex.

In the future, both developments could be served two stations planned on Metro's West Santa Ana Branch light rail line.
