After four years of construction, SoFi Stadium has made its debut in Inglewood with a game between the Rams and the Dallas Cowboys.  Take a look inside the $5-billion complex.

Located at northeast corner of Century Boulevard and Prairie Avenue, the 70,000-seat stadium is the most expensive sporting venue ever built in the United States.  The complex will play host to both the Rams - which have been housed in the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum since returning to Southern California in 2016 - and the Chargers - which are relocating from Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson.

HKS Architects designed the stadium, which is highlighted by a swooping roof canopy.  The structure is clad in the plastic material ETFE, inlaid with lights which display different colors at night.

Beneath the canopy, the stadium bowl is carved into the ground to account for the LAX flight path overhead.  An immense oculus display board is suspended from the roof.

SoFi Stadium will serve as the centerpiece of a roughly 300-acre mixed-use complex built on the former site of the Hollywood Park Racetrack.  The project, which is being developed by Wilson Meany, will eventually include:

  • 25 acres of open space - highlighted by an artificial lake;
  • 300,000 square feet of additional office space;
  • a 340,000-square-foot expansion of the retail complex;
  • a 300-room hotel; and
  • up to 2,500 homes.

Additionally, the NFL will complement its signature West Coast venue with a 200,000-square-foot campus which will serve as the new home of the NFL Network, NFL.com, the NFL app, and NFL Redzone.

Besides the Hollywood Park development, a slew of other large public and private investments are also in the works for the surrounding community.

Just south across Century Boulevard, the Los Angeles Clippers recently received clearance to build a $1.2-billion arena and entertainment complex.

Additionally, the City of Inglewood is pursuing the construction of a 1.8-mile automated people mover system which would connect the sporting venues with the Crenshaw/LAX light rail line.

SoFi Stadium, in addition to the neighboring Clippers development, has also sparked concerns of future displacement of longtime residents in Inglewood as a result of new investment attracted by the two sporting venues.  As a response to those concerns, the City of Inglewood adopted a permanent rent control ordinance in 2019.
