The rear parking lot of Anaheim's ARTIC transit hub is set to make way for the latest element of the OC Vibe development.
Last week, Japanese art collective TeamLab announced that it will open its first permanent U.S. museum at OC Vibe. The approximately 110,000-square-foot museum is set to open to the public in 2030.
“It is with great joy that we announce the opening of TeamLab’s first major museum in North America, located at OCVIBE in Anaheim,” said TeamLab founder Toshiyuki Inoko in a statement. “For TeamLab, through art, we seek to explore what perception is and what existence is. The artworks change with the presence of people, making them an integral part of the art itself. People immerse themselves with their entire bodies, transcending the boundaries between themselves, the artworks, and the world around them, becoming part of a borderless continuity."
Smith-Clementi, which is the master planner for the overall OC Vibe development, is also designing TeamLab's new U.S. home. The building directly connects to the adjacent transit center, and is intended to offer a different look to visitors from each side. Its exterior is largely windowless, with a surface that responds to sunlight and shifts in color throughout the day. It is also intended as an inverse of ARTIC, which is known for its transparent, illuminated facade. The museum, by contrast, is solid and colorful in the day, but will be less prominent than ARTIC after dusk.
LPA is the architect of record for the project, and is also working with TeamLab on its exhibits.
Founded in Tokyo, TeamLab is known for creating interactive digital art installations. The Los Angeles Times reports that one of its exhibits in Japan received 2.5 million visitors in 2024, which set a record as the most visited art museum by a single group.
OC Vibe, which is being developed by the Samueli family, is to eventually include a total of 1,500 homes, two hotels, and up to 1.1 million square feet of offices across 100 acres of land.
The initial phases of the project are set to open in 2027, including OC Vibe's first public plaza, a market hall dubbed Katella Commons, the 5,000-seat concert hall, and a mass-timber office building known as The Weave.
