An executive order announced last week by the Trump administration calls for a dramatic increase in the number of veteran housing units at the sprawling West Los Angeles VA Campus over the coming years.
The order calls upon the Secretary of Veteran Affairs to establish the "National Center for Warrior Independence," on the campus, which would specifically include:
- Homeless veterans in the Los Angeles metropolitan area and around the nation can avail themselves of this Center to seek and receive the care, benefits, and services to which they are entitled.
- Funds previously spent on housing or other services for illegal aliens will be redirected to construct, establish, and maintain this Center.
- The Center will promote self-sufficiency through housing, substance abuse treatment, and support for productive work for the veterans housed there.
- The goal is to house up to 6,000 homeless veterans at this Center by 2028.
Current efforts to redevelop the campus are expected to result in approximately 1,200 homes on the campus, and a federal judge previously ordered the construction of at least 2,500 additional units - though an appeals panel indicated in April that the order may have been overreach.
“Under President Trump, VA is implementing a host of important reforms to improve care and benefits for our nation’s heroes,” said VA Secretary Doug Collins in a statement. “This executive order builds on the progress we’ve made so far and puts us on a path to fixing some of the department’s most vexing problems.
The scope of what is proposed by the Trump administration would easily dwarf the scale of current development efforts on the campus, which are already billed as the largest veteran housing development in the United States, is expected to cost more than $1.4 billion.
